Wow, I pick all the wines for this company, so I think that everything we select is an excellent example of what each wine should be, but if I had to pick favorites, Daniele Pelassa and his line of “Romantic Wines from Piedmont” are at the top of the list. Daniele and his brother, Davide, took over the winery from their father, Mario, and quickly saw that the traditional market for their dad’s wines (locals who would have their jugs filled up and delivered) was aging and that younger Italians were buying wines from outside of their local villages, and usually in the normal 750ml bottle. With this in mind, Daniele & Davide made some modest investments in equipment, but as Daniele says, “Wine is made in the field” and so their efforts remain focused on growing the best grapes around and producing delicious wines made from the indigenous grapes of their area, namely: Arneis, Barbera, Dolcetto, and of course Nebbiolo, and then finding new markets to sell these wines to. We are so proud to represent these beautifully crafted wines in the Seattle market place. They are also noteworthy in that they have moved away from traditional “crest” labels and are using art of a friend to capture the feeling of the land on the labels.
More details on the winery:
Located in Montà d’ Alba, in the Roero area of Piedmont, the Pelassa family has owned 12 hectares of land used for vine cultivation and wine production. The Pelassa family crafts quality wines that reflect the terrior of the land focusing on the grapes best suited for the land: Arneis, Nebbiolo & Barbera. The present winery was created in 1960 by Mario Pelassa, who has been in the wine business for over 50 years. Mario first came into the wine industry in his youth travelling around on his bicycle selling various wines to the locals. He shortly upgraded to a motorcycle. At 18 he entered the army where he continued to sell wine to his comrades. After the army, Mario bought his first 5 acres of vineyards and the rest is history. Today, his sons, Davide and Daniele, continue with the family tradition, expanding their winery into new markets. Pelassa adheres mainly to traditional methods of vinification, but has integrated modern techniques through the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment.
We carry the following wines from Pelassa:
Pelassa San Vito Roero Arneis
Pelassa San Pancrazio Barbera D’Alba
Pelassa 2009 Langhe Bricco Enrichetta (Barbera/Nebbiolo)
